why i should never get flowers…

because i take the fun out of it.. today was International Women’s Day, and they were giving out free red roses to every female who walked past the forum.. i didn’t know of this occasion, and was a little bewildered to see girls everywhere carrying a stalk of red rose each.. at first, i thought NUS was doing a post-Valentine’s Day thing or something, hence the annoyance and the “whatever-lah-these-romeos” attitude as i made my way past the forum.. then, i saw a few people standing by boxes of red roses, and one of them approached me, saying to me all of a sudden “Happy International Women’s Day.” She then held out a red rose to me, the one every female in FASS seemed to be carrying.. my response was “errrrrmmmm, am i supposed to pay for this??” the sweet lady smiled and replied, “oh no, its free..” i felt a little, ok no, very foolish, so i tried to make up for my skepticism just now by giving her a huge smile and said “OH!! thank you! happy international women’s day to you too!” and went on my merry way to the library, with the stalk of red rose looking SO out of place in my hand.. don’t get me wrong, its not that i don’t like flowers, i do.. i think they are really pretty.. but i’m never a romantic, and even though this rose was not given to me under a romantic situation, its still, a rose… a RED rose, one associated with every kind of romanticism in this world.. and so as WOMANly as i am, or i feel i am, i don’t deserve the rose, and all its symbolisms.. the stalk just felt like one pretty stick in my hand, no more.. in fact, it looked a little dishonest in my hand.. or maybe i just didnt wanna look like all those girls who, one month ago, were carrying flowers given by their Valentines from one end of the campus to the other.. so as soon as i reached the library, i gave my rejected rose to Jah.. i’m sorry, people, but if it really is International Women’s Day today, then u should do more than just give out roses..you should make the guys in the campus learn a little chivalry, or for the love of God, spread some awareness about the discrimination of women in the Third World countries.. if you have enough money to buy stalks of roses, you can definitely afford to do the aforementioned suggestions..
